John A. Chiavaro, 76, of Eggertsville, a longtime educator
and administrator in the Newfane Central school system, died Jan. 15, 1998,
in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a brief illness.
The Buffalo native began his career as an industrial arts teacher in Newfane after receiving a bachelor of science degree from Buffalo State College in 1942. He received his master's degree in education from Niagara University in 1951
He moved into administrative positions in 1956, beginning with director of attendance
and transportation. Other positions included director of secondary education
and assistant superintendent for instruction. He retired in 1977.
After his retirement, he was active in many educational groups, including the
Western New York Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development. In 1985,
the association presented him its Distinguished Educator Award. He also was
a 35-year member of Phi Delta Kappa Educational Society, State University of
New York at Buffalo chapter.
He also served on the board of directors of the Buffalo State College Alumni, where he served on several committees.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Concetta; a daughter, Kathryn Bates of New Windsor; a son, Joseph of West Point; and two sisters, Mary Morra of Amherst and Genevieve Brown of West Virginia.
