Deceased Name: FREDA RUF, 101, RETIRED TEACHER
Freda Ruf, a teacher in the Newfane School District for more than 30 years,
died Wednesday (July 5, 2000) in Vineyard Inn, an assisted-living facility in
Largo, Fla. She was 101.
She was born Freda Mudge in Johnson Creek.
A graduate of Middleport Normal School, Mrs. Ruf moved to Newfane, where she taught first grade from 1921 until the mid-1950s, working mostly at Newfane Elementary School, although she taught in some of the town's former one-room schoolhouses, according to Curt Brown, a former pupil. Until her death, she could remember the names of most of her pupils, Brown said.
Her interest in her pupils was reflected in her hobby of collecting news items concerning them, which she followed by subscribing to local newspapers even after moving to Largo after her retirement from teaching. Her collection was recently turned over to Newfane Free Library and is open to the public.
After moving to Florida, Mrs. Ruf continued to maintain a home in Newfane, where she spent summers until about 1992, according to Brown.
Mrs. Ruf was a member of United Methodist Church in Largo. She enjoyed bridge and listening to music. Until she was 95, she drove to concerts with neighbors.
She and Henry Ruf, who died in 1981, were married for 50 years.
Burial will be in Hartland Cemetery. No local services will be held.
