A funeral Mass for Edward R. Wapen, 75, Wapen Lane, town of
Cape Vincent, will be said at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Vincent of Paul Church with
the Rev. Pierre Aubin officiating. Burial will be later this spring at the family's
convenience.
Mr. Wapen died Wednesday morning at his home.
There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with Cleveland Funeral Home, Cape Vincent.
He was a history teacher for several schools, including Clayton Central School and Wayne Central School, and taught at Newfane Central School from 1957 to 1988. He moved to Cape Vincent after his retirement.
During his teaching career, he also coached several sports teams, continuing to do so in the Cape Vincent area after his retirement.
He was a communicant of St. Vincent of Paul Church, and a member of the Clayton Knights of Columbus, 82nd Airborne Division Club, New York State Teachers Association and New York State Retired Teachers Association.
Born Aug. 12, 1926, in Oswego, son of Constantine and Stella Rapocki Rypchinski, he later changed his last name to Wapen.
He graduated from Oswego High School and received a bachelor's degree in education from Oswego State Teachers College and a master's degree from Niagara University.
He served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne during World War II.
He married Anna Mae Kasperek on Nov. 24, 1949, at St. Stephen's Church, Oswego.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Edward R. Jr., Lockport; two daughters and their husbands, Paula and David Devereaux, Lockport, and Carol and Michael Kopp, Newfane; a brother, Frank Wapen, Oswego; two sisters, Estelle Engler, Oswego, and Genevieve Tiefke, Detroit, Mich., two grandsons and several nieces and nephews.
